Wyoming State Constitutional Convention 1889

The Wyoming Constitution Convention began September 2, 1889 without the authorization from an enabling act. The articles were individually voted on, creating the final Constitution of Wyoming on September 30, 1889. It was later ratified on November 5, 1889.

Concerning the oath to be required of all civil officers.

Every civil officer, except members of the general assembly, shall, before he enters upon the duties of his office, and at the time of qualifying for the same, take and subscribe an oath or animation, to support the constitution of the United States and of the state of Wyoming, and to faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which he is about to enter, to the best of his skill and ability, and that he has not directly or indirectly, by bribery, the corrupt use of money, menace, promise of reward, or other corrupt means or devices whatsoever, sought or secured his election or appointment to said office.

Every member of the general assembly shall before he enters upon the duties of his office take a like oath or affimation, the same to be administered to him in the hall of the house to which he shall have been elected.

Any civil officer or member of the general assembly having taken the oath or affimation herein required of him who shall be found guilty of having sworn or affirmed falsely in that respect and convicted thereof shall be deemed guilty of perjury and punished by imprisonment at hard labor in the state penitentiary for a period of not less than one year nor more than ten years and by a fine of not less than one thousand dollars nor more than ten thousand dollars, and forever thereafter shall be disqualified from holding any office of trust or profit in this state.
